Here at Top Dog Tips we are going to be updating this site with a wealth of useful training and behavioural tips for you and your dog. At Top Dog Tips we believe in influencing your dog’s behaviour by being the “top dog”. Now this is similar to other terms you may have heard of such as “alpha dog” or “pack leader” BUT with a very important difference… While “alpha dog” and “pack leader” often refer to you being the dominant member of your canine family in a way similar to how wolf packs operate, recent studies into wild dog packs (rather than wolf packs) such as of dingoes and the New Guinea Singing Dogs have shown that the dog the pack follows tends to be the one with the most meaningful social connections within the pack – the one with the most “friends”, if you like! Other studies have also shown that dogs prefer to interact and make social connections with someone who is generous – whether that is the sharing of food or letting another win at tug-of-war. Dogs actually seem skilled at determining which individuals would be best co-operative partners. In other words the more strong social connections you have with the other members of the pack and the more generous your disposition the more likely the pack is to be influenced by you and thus follow you.
