Car Dog Crate Selection I thought I share some links and resources for car crates after I did some fairly extensive research on selecting a crate for our new Hungarian Vizsla dog. We decided to get a crate for the boot rather than just putting a dog guard behind the back seats for a couple of reasons. Firstly I carry a lot of other stuff with me in the boot and having a crate allows me to keep the dog separate from all that. However more importantly I think that a crate is actually a more secure mode of transport for the dog rather than having them rattling around in the whole boot. In addition when opening the boot the dog can’t leap out before we’re ready. Apparently lots of accidents are caused by dogs leaping out the back of a car onto a busy road or suchlike. There seems to be 4 basic types of crate that I could consider: • Rectangular crates • Crate with a sloping front only • Crates with both a sloping front and back • Custom-made crates Obviously the two most important factors to consider when selecting the crate was that it was appropriate for the size of dog (and for a Hungarian Vizsla that generally means a large size) and also that it fitted into the boot of the car. Some very rough guides for crate sizes are: Small Dog Crates:Toy Poodle, King Charles, Westie, lhasa apso, Bichon Frise, Chihuahua, Boston Terrier, Fox Terrier, Jack Russell, Maltese Terrier, Manchester Terrier, Norfolk Terrier, Norwich Terrier, Cairn terrier, Papillon, Pomeranian, Yorkshire Terrier, suitable for small dogs and medium puppies. Medium Dog Crates: Dachshund (standard), Bedlington terrier, Miniature Poodle, Shetland sheepdog, Scottie, Corgi, Whippet, Cocker spaniel, French Bulldog, Beagle and also medium Puppies. Intermediate Dog Crates: Bull terrier, English Bulldog, Springer spaniel, Basset hound, Staffordshire bull terrier, Whippet, Brittany spaniel, Welsh springer spaniel and also larger puppies. Large Dog Crates: Border Collie, Rough Collie, Airedale, Springer, Bulldog, Dalmatian, Pointer, Standard Poodle, Bull terrier, Labrador, Boxer, Setter, Weimeraner, Retriever, Doberman, Rottweiler, Vizsla. Giant or Extra Large Dog Crates: Doberman, German Shepherd Dog, Old english sheepdog, Rottweiler, Great Dane, Bullmastif, Afghan. Other factors to consider are whether the crate can be dismantled and folded flat when not in use and whether it will rattle when you are actually using the car. While you might be able to stand a rattle for short journeys I could imagine it would get annoying on a long one. I thought it was going to be an easy search but actually some products did not come up in the regular google search and I only saw them in Amazon. I have an...Read More
